Frequently Asked Questions

What are silk baby mittens for?

They stop a newborn scratching their own face. Babies are born with sharp nails and no control over their hands, and scratch mitts are the usual answer in the first weeks.

What age are they for?

Newborn and the first few months, until a baby starts wanting to use their hands properly. After that most parents stop using mitts altogether.

Are they safe?

They are a simple textile item with no small parts, no fastenings and no detachable pieces. As with any baby clothing, check them before each use for loose threads or a pulled seam, and stop using them if you find either. A loose thread around a finger is the risk worth knowing about with any mitt, in any fabric.

Should my baby sleep in them?

That is a question for your midwife or health visitor rather than a shop. Safe sleep guidance varies by country and gets updated, and we are not the right source for it.

Do they restrict a baby's hands?

They cover the hand, which is the point, and that does mean less touching and grasping. Most guidance suggests using mitts when they are needed rather than all the time, so a baby can explore with their hands.

Why silk rather than cotton?

Silk is smoother and lighter than cotton and does not shed fibres the way brushed cotton can. Some parents prefer it against very new skin for that reason.

Will they help with eczema or skin conditions?

We make no medical claims at all for these. If your baby has a diagnosed skin condition, ask your doctor or health visitor what to use. Silk garments are sometimes discussed in that context and that is a conversation for a clinician, not a product page.

Are they hypoallergenic?

We do not make that claim.

What colours are there?

Blue and pink.

Is there a size choice?

No, one newborn size.

How do they stay on?

With a soft elasticated cuff. It is gentle enough not to mark a wrist, which also means an active baby can work them off.

Are they machine washable?

Yes. Cold water, gentle cycle, mild detergent, no bleach or fabric softener. Air dry rather than tumble drying.

Can I wash them with the rest of the baby laundry?

Wash them cold and separately from anything heavy. Baby laundry often goes through a hot wash, and hot water damages silk.

Should I wash them before first use?

Yes, as with any new baby clothing.

Do they come as a pair?

Yes, each order is a pair.

Can I buy both colours?

Yes, they are ordered separately by colour.

Are they a good gift?

They are one of the more popular new-baby gifts we send, usually with a note that the recipient can return them if they already have some.

Do they come gift wrapped?

They ship in our standard packaging.

How long do they last?

Most babies grow out of needing mitts within a couple of months, so the practical life is short regardless of the fabric.

Is the silk treated with anything?

No. They arrive with no finish, dye treatment or fragrance beyond the colour itself.

Will the colour run?

Wash cold and separately the first time, as with any dyed silk.

Are they warm?

Silk is light, so they are not a warm mitt. They are for stopping scratches rather than for keeping hands warm outdoors.

Can I use them outdoors in winter?

They are not designed for that. A proper outdoor mitt is a different product.

What if they are too big?

A newborn size is generous on a small or premature baby. If they do not fit, return them unused within 14 days.

How much is delivery?

EUR 25 across Europe, free over EUR 75. A single pair will not reach the threshold.

How long does delivery take?

Allow 5 to 7 days across Europe once your order is on its way.

Can I return them?

Yes, 14 days from delivery under EU consumer law, provided they are unused and in resaleable condition.

Can I return them if they have been used?

Used baby items are not resaleable, so change-of-mind returns need them unused. A fault or transit damage is a separate matter and we will replace them.

What if a seam comes loose?

Stop using them and contact us. That is a fault and we will replace them regardless of how long you have had them.

Do you sell other baby items?

Not currently. These are the only newborn item in the range.

Buying Guide

6 min read Silk Pyjamas Europe

What they are

Scratch mitts for a newborn. Babies arrive with sharp nails and no control over their hands, and for the first few weeks that combination ends up on their own face. Mitts are the simple answer, and these are the silk version of a very ordinary thing.

Safety, which we would rather put near the top

These are a plain textile item: no fastenings, no small parts, nothing that can detach. The one thing worth checking, with any mitt in any fabric, is loose threads and pulled seams, because a thread that finds its way around a small finger is the real risk. Look at them before each use and stop using them if you find either. If a seam goes, contact us and we will replace them however long you have had them.

On whether a baby should sleep in them: ask your midwife or health visitor. Safe sleep guidance differs between countries and gets updated, and a shop is not the right source for it. Most general advice is to use mitts when they are needed rather than around the clock, so a baby can still use their hands to explore.

Why silk

Silk is lighter and smoother than cotton and does not shed fibres the way brushed cotton can. That is the honest reason parents choose it, and it is a preference rather than a benefit we can prove. We make no medical claims for these at all. If your baby has a diagnosed skin condition, what to put on their hands is a question for your doctor.

Practical bits

One newborn size, sold as a pair, in blue or pink. The cuff is soft enough not to mark a wrist, which also means a determined baby can pull them off. Wash them before first use, then cold on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent, no bleach or softener, and air dry. Keep them out of the hot wash the rest of the baby laundry usually goes through, because heat is what damages silk.

Most babies stop needing mitts within a couple of months, so treat this as a short-lived item whatever it is made of.
