Frequently Asked Questions

Will white go yellow over time?

Not if you wash it cold and avoid bleach. Bleach is what yellows white silk, because it attacks the protein fibre itself.

Does white show marks more than the other colours?

Yes, and it is worth being honest about that. Night cream and hair oil show on white between washes in a way they do not on black or brown.

Why is white the most popular colour?

It matches bedding people already own, and it shows the silk's sheen most clearly, because there is no dye competing with the way light sits on the weave.

Can I wash white silk with my white cotton sheets?

Better not to. Cotton needs a hotter wash and a rougher cycle than silk tolerates, so wash the silk separately and cold.

Is this the same pillowcase as the other colours?

Yes. Every colour in the range is the same 100% mulberry silk at 22 momme, 51cm x 76cm, with the same hidden zip and the same price. Only the colour differs.

What does 22 momme mean?

It is how silk weight is measured, the way thread count is used for cotton. Lighter silk around 16 momme feels thin and wears sooner at the seams; heavier silk above 25 momme costs a good deal more. 22 sits where most people want it.

Is it real silk?

Yes, 100% mulberry silk on both faces. Satin is a weave rather than a fibre, so a satin pillowcase is often polyester. We sell that separately and it is a different fabric, not a cheaper version of this.

What size is it and how does it close?

51cm x 76cm, which fits a standard European or UK pillow, with a hidden zip along one edge so the pillow stays inside and nothing presses against your face.

Can I machine wash it?

Yes. Cold water, gentle cycle, mild detergent, no bleach, then line dry or tumble dry on low. Wash a strong colour separately the first time.

Will the colour fade?

Not quickly, if you wash it cold and keep it out of direct sun to dry. Hot water and sunlight are what pull colour out of dyed silk.

Is white see through?

At 22 momme it is opaque. White shows the sheen of silk more clearly than any other colour, which is why it photographs the way it does.

Does white yellow over time?

Not with cold washing and shade drying. What yellows silk is heat and harsh detergent, not age.

Will makeup show on it?

Yes, more than on the dark colours. That is the trade-off with white and it washes out cold.

Does it match hotel bedding?

It is the closest thing in the range to a standard white bed, which is why it is the most bought colour.

Can I bleach it if it stains?

Never. Bleach destroys silk. Cold water and a mild detergent, promptly, is what works.

Which colour do most people pair it with?

White with white. It is the one colour people tend to buy two of.

Is the silk the same on both sides?

Yes, mulberry silk on both faces. There is no cotton or polyester backing, which is what some cheaper 'silk' pillowcases do.

Will it fit my pillow?

It is 51cm x 76cm, which is the standard European and UK pillow size. A continental square 65cm x 65cm pillow will not fit.

How does it close?

A hidden zip along one edge, so nothing shows and the pillow stays in.

Does the zip scratch?

It sits inside a fabric flap rather than against your face. It is the reason a zip is better than an envelope closure on a pillowcase you sleep on.

Can it go in the tumble dryer?

No. Hang it to dry away from direct heat and sunlight. Silk dries quickly and heat is what shortens its life.

Does it need ironing?

Rarely. If you want it flat, iron on the reverse at a cool setting. A hot iron glazes silk and the mark does not come out.

Will it shrink?

Not if you wash it cold. Hot water is the risk with any natural fibre.

How often should I wash it?

About as often as a cotton pillowcase, so once a week or so. Cold gentle washing does not wear silk out.

What detergent should I use?

A mild one, ideally a silk detergent. No bleach, and nothing with optical brighteners or enzymes, which are what actually damage silk.

How long will it last?

Years with cold washing and shade drying. Heat, bleach and direct sunlight are what age silk, in that order.

Is it hypoallergenic?

We make no such claim. Silk is a natural protein fibre and many people with easily irritated skin prefer it, which is a preference rather than a tested claim. Anyone with a diagnosed silk allergy should avoid it.

Will it stop wrinkles or help my skin?

No, and we have taken that claim off this site. Silk is smoother than cotton so it catches less on skin and hair. That is a real and modest difference and it is all we will say.

How much is delivery?

One pillowcase sits under the €75 threshold, so delivery is €25 unless you add something else. Two clear it and ship free.

Can I return it?

Yes, 14 days from delivery to change your mind under EU consumer law, unused and in resaleable condition.

Buying Guide

Why white outsells everything else

White is the most ordered colour here, and the reason is simple: it matches bedding people already own. Nobody has to plan around it. It also shows the silk itself more honestly than any other colour, because there is no dye competing with the way light moves across the weave. If you want to see what 22 momme mulberry silk actually looks like, white is the one that shows you.

On a bed it reads clean rather than clinical, which is the risk with white cotton. Silk has enough sheen and drape that a white case looks soft instead of hotel-crisp, and it does not need ironing to look right.

The honest downside

White shows marks between washes more than anything else in the range. Night cream, hair oil, fake tan and mascara all leave a visible trace. None of it is permanent and all of it washes out cold, but if you go four or five days between changes you will see it. If that sounds like your routine, black or brown will suit you better, and they cost the same.

The other thing to know is bleach. Do not use it. Bleach yellows white silk permanently, because it attacks the protein fibre rather than lifting a stain from it. That is the opposite of what it does to cotton, and it is the single most common way people ruin a white silk pillowcase. Cold water and a mild detergent keep it white indefinitely.

Washing it with everything else

Keep it away from your cotton sheets in the machine. Cotton wants a hotter wash and a rougher cycle than silk tolerates, so a shared load either under-washes the cotton or over-washes the silk. Wash the silk cold, on its own or with other silk, and it will outlast the habit of not bothering.

The rest of the range

Every colour is the same 100% mulberry silk at 22 momme, 51cm x 76cm, with a hidden zip, and every one costs EUR 49. You can see all eleven together on the mulberry silk pillowcase page. For a lighter and less expensive fabric, the satin silk pillowcase is a different weave rather than a lesser version of this one.

Silk is smoother than woven cotton, so hair and skin slide over it instead of catching, and it holds less moisture so it draws less of your moisturiser off overnight. We make no medical, anti-ageing or hypoallergenic claims for it.
