Frequently Asked Questions

Is the red dark or bright?

Deep rather than bright. On silk red reads richer than it would on cotton, because the fibre reflects light instead of absorbing it.

Will the red run in the wash?

Wash it separately the first time, as you would with any saturated dye. After that it is fine with similar colours.

Is red too strong for a bedroom?

It is the boldest colour we stock, so it depends what it sits against. One red case on white bedding reads as an accent; a full set of them does not.

Does red fade?

Deep dyes show fading soonest. Cold water and drying out of the sun are what keep it.

Is this the same pillowcase as the other colours?

Yes. Every colour in the range is the same 100% mulberry silk at 22 momme, 51cm x 76cm, with the same hidden zip and the same price. Only the colour differs.

What does 22 momme mean?

It is how silk weight is measured, the way thread count is used for cotton. Lighter silk around 16 momme feels thin and wears sooner at the seams; heavier silk above 25 momme costs a good deal more. 22 sits where most people want it.

Is it real silk?

Yes, 100% mulberry silk on both faces. Satin is a weave rather than a fibre, so a satin pillowcase is often polyester. We sell that separately and it is a different fabric, not a cheaper version of this.

What size is it and how does it close?

51cm x 76cm, which fits a standard European or UK pillow, with a hidden zip along one edge so the pillow stays inside and nothing presses against your face.

Can I machine wash it?

Yes. Cold water, gentle cycle, mild detergent, no bleach, then line dry or tumble dry on low. Wash a strong colour separately the first time.

Will the colour fade?

Not quickly, if you wash it cold and keep it out of direct sun to dry. Hot water and sunlight are what pull colour out of dyed silk.

Is the silk the same on both sides?

Yes, mulberry silk on both faces. There is no cotton or polyester backing, which is what some cheaper 'silk' pillowcases do.

Will it fit my pillow?

It is 51cm x 76cm, which is the standard European and UK pillow size. A continental square 65cm x 65cm pillow will not fit.

How does it close?

A hidden zip along one edge, so nothing shows and the pillow stays in.

Does the zip scratch?

It sits inside a fabric flap rather than against your face. It is the reason a zip is better than an envelope closure on a pillowcase you sleep on.

Can it go in the tumble dryer?

No. Hang it to dry away from direct heat and sunlight. Silk dries quickly and heat is what shortens its life.

Does it need ironing?

Rarely. If you want it flat, iron on the reverse at a cool setting. A hot iron glazes silk and the mark does not come out.

Will it shrink?

Not if you wash it cold. Hot water is the risk with any natural fibre.

How often should I wash it?

About as often as a cotton pillowcase, so once a week or so. Cold gentle washing does not wear silk out.

What detergent should I use?

A mild one, ideally a silk detergent. No bleach, and nothing with optical brighteners or enzymes, which are what actually damage silk.

How long will it last?

Years with cold washing and shade drying. Heat, bleach and direct sunlight are what age silk, in that order.

Is it hypoallergenic?

We make no such claim. Silk is a natural protein fibre and many people with easily irritated skin prefer it, which is a preference rather than a tested claim. Anyone with a diagnosed silk allergy should avoid it.

Will it stop wrinkles or help my skin?

No, and we have taken that claim off this site. Silk is smoother than cotton so it catches less on skin and hair. That is a real and modest difference and it is all we will say.

How much is delivery?

One pillowcase sits under the €75 threshold, so delivery is €25 unless you add something else. Two clear it and ship free.

Can I return it?

Yes, 14 days from delivery to change your mind under EU consumer law, unused and in resaleable condition.

What shade of red is it?

A deep true red rather than a bright pillar box or a wine. It reads darker in the folds than on a flat screen.

Is red too strong for a bedroom?

It is the boldest colour in the range with the gold. Most people buy one rather than a pair, or use it on a spare bed.

Does it bleed in the wash?

Give it its own first wash. Deep reds are the single most likely dye on silk to move in the first cycle.

Does it show marks?

Less than the pale colours. Water spots are the thing to watch if it dries unevenly.

Will the red fade?

Faster than the pale colours if it sees direct sun, because there is more dye to lose. Dry it in the shade.

Which colour do people pair it with?

Black, or white for contrast.

Buying Guide

6 min read Silk Pyjamas Europe

The strongest colour we stock

Red is deep rather than bright, and on silk it behaves differently from every other fabric you will have seen it on. Cotton absorbs light and flattens a red into something closer to brick. Silk reflects along the weave, so the same dye reads rich at the surface and considerably darker in the folds. It is the most dramatic colour in the range by a distance.

It is also the one that needs the most thought about where it goes. A single red case against white bedding reads as a deliberate accent. A full set of red across a bed is a much bigger statement, and most people who buy two buy one red and one black rather than two reds.

First wash, and every wash after

Wash it separately the first time. That is standard for any saturated dye and it is not a fault in the fabric: deep dyes release a little colour on the first pass through water, and you do not want that happening next to a white case. After the first wash it is fine with similar colours.

Cold water only, mild detergent, never bleach. Reds show fading soonest of anything here because there is the most pigment to lose, and direct sunlight while drying is what does it. Dry it in shade and it stays deep for years.

What it suits

White, black and natural linen. Against pink or a warm neutral it tends to fight rather than sit, and against a strong wood tone it can get heavy. If you want warmth without the intensity, gold or brown will get you there.

The rest of the range

Every colour is the same 100% mulberry silk at 22 momme, 51cm x 76cm, with a hidden zip, and every one costs EUR 49. You can see all eleven together on the mulberry silk pillowcase page. For a lighter and less expensive fabric, the satin silk pillowcase is a different weave rather than a lesser version of this one.

Silk is smoother than woven cotton, so hair and skin slide over it instead of catching, and it holds less moisture so it draws less of your moisturiser off overnight. We make no medical, anti-ageing or hypoallergenic claims for it.
